Matteo Bozzo

Research Collaborator

Matteo Bozzo holds a degree in Molecular and Health Biology and a PhD in Experimental Medicine. His undergraduate thesis marked the beginning of his research on cephalochordates, focusing on their development to clarify the evolution of vertebrate body plans, particularly the nervous system. His research has provided new insights into the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of cephalochordate larvae, including the identification of glial cells similar to those in vertebrates. More recently, he has been investigating the effects of emerging environmental contaminants, particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), on the development of cephalochordates and other marine invertebrates.

After obtaining his PhD in 2021, he was awarded research grants from the Department of Experimental Medicine at the University of Genoa to further investigate the characterization of NK cells in cancer patients. Since 2023, he has been a researcher in Comparative Anatomy, Cellular Biology, and Developmental Biology at the Department of Earth, Environment, and Life Sciences (DISTAV) at the University of Genoa. His current research focuses on three main areas: eco-evo-devo (evolutionary and ecological developmental biology) of chordates, the use of zebrafish as a model for studying developmental and neurodegenerative diseases, and the analysis of the innate immune system’s response to cancer.

Dr. Bozzo has enriched his scientific career through international collaborations and research stays abroad as a visiting scientist, working with researchers in France (CNRS) and the Czech Republic (AVCR), as evidenced by his publications. He is an active member of the Italian Society for Cell and Developmental Biology (GEI-SIBSC), the European Society for Evolutionary Developmental Biology (EED), the International Society of Developmental Biologists (ISDB), and the Italian Society for Experimental Biology (SIBS). Since 2024, he has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Biological Research – Bulletin of the Italian Society of Experimental Biology.
